FAQs on Greening Halal Businesses
Introduction
To provide information as below:
1. What is the Objective of Green Halal Businesses (GHB)?
GHB supports Malaysian halal businesses, particularly, SMEs with technical and financial resources to implement impactful, sustainable greener practices, thereby enhancing their business competitiveness and resilience.
2. Why is this program important for halal businesses?
Decarbonization is essential for sustained competitiveness and compliance with global environmental commitments. Early transition provides SMEs with enhanced resource efficiency, cost savings, preferential procurement opportunities, and access to new markets.
3. What does GHB entail?
SMEs will be provided with complimentary technical assistance, affordable green financing, and subsidized access to carbon accounting software. In return, SMEs must attend designated training and report their carbon emissions using partnering software providers. Participating banks will fund transition activities of SMEs beginning in the second year.
To provide information as below:
1) Who is eligible to participate in GHB?
- Must be a Malaysian business registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) or any other relevant authority for Sabah and Sarawak; AND
- Must be a SME (defined under SME Corporation Malaysia’s Guideline for SME Definition); AND
- Must meet at least one of the following criteria:
• Holds a valid and active halal certification; OR
• Committed to undergo halal certification process; OR
• Involved in the halal supply chain or provision of halal-related services.
2) Do I still qualify if I do not have any prior knowledge on ESG?
Yes, as long as you fulfill the above criteria. No prior ESG experience is required.
3) What transition activities can be considered under GHB?
Transition activities may include, but not limited to:
- purchase/use/rental/maintenance of green certified and sustainable premises/equipment/plant/materials and machineries
- hiring of consultant to advise on and expenses for transformation to sustainable business, and
- expenses to obtain sustainability certification.

- Form 9, 24, 44 & 49 or equivalent form under Companies Act 2016
- Memorandum and Articles of Association of the Company [MA] / Company’s Constitution or equivalent
- Company Profile (if any)
- Latest 3 years Financial Statements
- Company’s bank statement for the last 6 months.
